Former Players Are Talking About Their Brain Health
A CBS News Philadelphia report on the Football Players Health Study at Harvard, which the report calls the largest study of its kind, and on what former players say they are living with.
Independent news coverage. Brain Mapping Solutions is not featured in, and is not connected with, this report.
Understanding the 88 Plan
The 88 Plan is a benefit for vested former NFL players under the collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the NFL Players Association. The NFL Player Benefits summary for vested former players describes it as a plan that “provides reimbursement of eligible expenses if you are diagnosed with Dementia, ALS or Parkinson’s.” A plan board, the 88 Board, decides whether a former player qualifies.
Beginning in 2025, the same summary lists reimbursement of up to $185,000 a year for in-patient care at an eligible institution and up to $165,000 a year for at-home care.
Brain Mapping Solutions does not administer the 88 Plan and does not decide eligibility or coverage. If you or a family member may qualify, start with the NFL Player Benefits Office, and ask your physicians which medical records the plan requires. A neurological assessment and brain imaging can be part of that medical record.
